Duo show with Sien Godderis at Remy Wezenbeek, Antwerp, BE

Alexandra Fraser presents a series of paintings and drawings exploring the female form. The fragile body is our means of existence, a glorious and complex machine trapped and distorted in spaces where they cannot breathe.

Hovering between the personal and the political, these intimate portraits are a celebration of womanhood and the solidarity between subjects. At the same time, they reflect the uneasy dissonance between the experience of living in a body and its position in society. In some cases, those portrayed were asked to deform their own flesh and give an unconventional, uncomfortable representation of themselves. In turn, other paintings explore the feeling of being trapped, referring to mythological sirens and the demonisation of female beauty.

Because the female form has been celebrated as an object throughout art history, the subjective experiences of women in these bodies have been minimised; the anatomical wonder has become a trap.
